On October 6th 2012, over 20 Carisbrook residents volunteered their time and efforts to begin the long and onerous task of cleaning Deep Creek which was inundated with rubbish and debris left over from the devastating floods of January 2011.
The aim is to return the creek to it's former glory where families relaxed and picnicked, so through the rain, the mud and the mess they toiled to clean it up.
With the help of a tractor and muscle power an area some 200 metres long was painstakingly made devoid of tree stumps and rubbish and left over flotsam.
Whilst the bottom of the creek was being cleared of this mess others were attacking the banks and removing rubbish and unwanted logs.
Morning tea was provided by the Lions who are always involved in giving to our community, and with this added fuel and four hours hard work and unbelievable transformation took place.
Another working bee was held in early November to reclaim a further section and more are planned to continue until the whole creek as it meanders through Carisbrook is as the community desires.
Since the initial start of the Clean Up a number of working bees have taken place and this has seen a clear creek beyond the footbridge and a removal of hazardous vegetation that will result in the long time viability of established Red River Gums.
These working bees are still ongoing and the eventual aim, with the help of the DEPI will see a plan for the creek to be maintained 12 months of the year.
